Product Design

Concepts developed into detailed, manufacturable designs, with the process, material and assembly worked out before tooling is cut.

What we do

We take a product from an idea, a sketch or an existing part that needs improving, and engineer it into a design that can be made reliably and at the right cost. That means choosing the process early and designing to it: draft angles and wall thickness for moulding, bend allowances for sheet metal, orientation and supports for additive.

  • Concept development and design studies
  • Detailed parametric 3D CAD of parts and assemblies
  • Design for manufacture and assembly (DFM/DFA)
  • 2D production drawings with GD&T
  • Tolerance stack-up and fit checks
  • Prototype parts and design iteration
  • Supplier liaison and design release

Case study

Drink Lomi single-serve shaker pod

Drink Lomi makes single-serve matcha drinks. They wanted a product that holds one serving of their drink sachets, syrup, matcha and foam powder, so someone on the go can make and enjoy a cold foam matcha while they are out and about. We took the shaker pod from the initial brief to production-ready intent, then found and assessed the companies to tool and produce it.

The brief

The pod had to keep three different ingredients in good condition until the moment the drink is made, be easy to use away from a kitchen, and look and feel like part of the Drink Lomi brand. It also had to be designed from the start for volume production, so the parts approved in prototype could be made the same way in every batch.

Project

Client

Drink Lomi

Product

Single-serve shaker pod for cold foam matcha

Holds

One serving of syrup, matcha and foam powder

Use

On the go, away from a kitchen

Scope

Brief to production-ready design, plus manufacturer selection

Design development

From brief to production-ready intent

01

Brief

Agreed with Drink Lomi what the pod had to hold, how people would use it, and how it should look and feel.

02

Initial concepts

Explored ways to hold the syrup, matcha and foam powder separately until the drink is made, and how the user mixes and shakes it.

03

CAD design

Developed the chosen concept as detailed 3D CAD, with each part sized for a single serving.

04

Styling prototypes

Made appearance models so Drink Lomi could judge the shape, proportions and finish against their brand.

05

Ergonomic models

Tested grip, opening and shaking with models in the hand, and adjusted the form to suit.

06

Sealing solutions

Developed seals that keep the ingredients fresh and separate until use, and stop the drink leaking when it is shaken.

07

Prototype iterations

Built and tested working prototypes, refining the design after each round.

08

Design for manufacture

Finalised wall thicknesses, draft, parting lines and tolerances so the parts could be tooled and produced consistently at volume.

Manufacturing partners

Finding the right company to make it

With the design production-ready, we found companies to make the tooling and run production. We assessed each one’s manufacturing processes and capabilities against what Drink Lomi needed from the production run.

Quality

Consistent parts, sealing faces and finish that match the approved prototypes, batch after batch.

Quantity

Capacity to produce the volumes Drink Lomi need, with room to grow.

Speed

Tooling lead time and production rate that fit Drink Lomi’s launch plans.
